The
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency defines bioremediation as "a
process whereby naturally occurring microbes, typically bacteria or
fungi, degrade harmful chemicals into less toxic or non-toxic compounds."
Simple Green's role in bioremediation is two-fold:
suppressing vapors and altering the physical composition of the
contaminant through a special process called Micro-Particulate Fractionalization
(MPF). The MPF process involves breaking down large globs
of oil, grease and fat into much smaller microscopic droplets called
"micelles." The MPF process makes these droplets
increasingly smaller and more numerous, offering them as a food
source for the stimulated bacteria with no deleterious effect on
the indigenous bacteria.
According to Celia Henkens, Co-Director Marine Biomedical
Center Duke University Marine Laboratory, "The part that Simple
Green plays in this process is facilitating the hydrocarbon bacterial
juxtaposition. Hydrocarbons tend to stay in oily pockets and
bacteria like to live in watery places and Simple Green works well
to help these come together."
Simple Green is currently being used as part of a
bioremediation process developed by H&H Eco Systems, Inc.
H&H specializes in advanced bioremediation of hazardous waste.
H&H Eco Systems, Inc. has developed an unique "bio-triangle"
approach to dealing with hazardous waste. Simple Green alters
the physical composition of the contaminant, H&H nutrients provide
a balanced biological diet and the Microenfractionator® serves
as the mechanical component to enhance this process.
The following is a summary of the "bio-triangle"
bioremediation process:
Simple Green alters the physical composition of the
contaminant and suppresses vapors (while being non-toxic to bacteria
and not acting as a food source). Simple Green breaks down
the hydrocarbon chain, reducing it to near molecular size.
This gives the biological system the best opportunity to decontaminate
the hydrocarbons.
H&H Micro-2D and H&H Micro-51D provide a nearly
complete program by nutritionally balancing the bioremediation process.
The H&H nutrient line represents blends of organic and inorganic
compounds and elements as well as growth regulators and co-metabolites.
These nutrients are designed to stimulate the indigenous microflora
degrader population. Laboratory tests have shown as much as
a ten-fold increase in bacterial activity using H&H nutrient
products versus straight chemical nutrients.
The Microenfractionator® provides for over 90%
homogenization of the soil thus allowing for nearly complete distribution
of chemicals and nutrients throughout the biological system. A complete
oxygenation of the soil as well as a purging of the carbon dioxide
occurs. Keeping the oxygen level high results in a much faster degradation
of contaminate in the soil.
